Is twitter the world's pulse?

6th April 2011

A bbc article today suggests that reading and analysing tweets in bulk can help you predict good stock market bets.

This follows earlier studies on analysing areas of our life ranging from happiness to politics, showing that understanding what people are tweeting about can provide you with a very good insight into what is going on in the world.

So is twitter the pulse of the globe?

Obviously there are many more people not tweeting than those who are.  But If the twitterati are in any way representative, there are enough to make the statistics count.

We foresee many more applications of this statistical analysis, showing for example what areas in a country are economically active, or the sorts of needs that large businesses and governments have for suppliers.
